July 10th: Visiting our muskie fingerling friends at Rock Lake Hatchery:
We had planned a field trip to the hatchery to see how the tiger fingerlings were doing in comparison to years past when they weren't feed live feed. One of the ponds has thousands of fingerlings all over it. They vary from 3-6 inches and were healthy and ready for the next batch of minnows to arrive next Tuesday (July 13th). The second pond had less fish but we noticed that most of these fingerlings were much larger. We saw a couple that were around 7 inches and already putting on some girth!! It so awesome to see these little guys and imagine they will grow to be 20+ pound tackle testing machines!! We noticed some of the fish were in deeper water holding tight to the bottom and others were right on the edges or suspended out in open water. You could get an idea for where the fish were staging, it was fun to think about how this translates into their behaviors when they get bigger... Is it the fish's attitude at the moment (hungry/aggressive or full bellied/passive) or over-all "personality" or gender of each fish that dictates how and where it stages in the body of water it occupies? It was fun to picture the pond/structures and imagine where the tigers would lay waiting in a larger body of water. In a small metal building that NMDGF calls the "walleye room". There are 10 large tubs and 8 of these are full of tigers from the second shipment that came in from Pennsylvania this year. It was fun watching the tigers feed train on pellets with a vengeance. Some would shoot completely out of the water and do a twist or two in the air before re-entry! It will be interesting to see what comes from this years fingerlings, in years past the would always loose the majority of fish due to cannibalism. So far things look like they are going good and we are looking forward to getting the second shipment of minnows in from Mr Fish soon!! See pictures from this trip in the Photogallery.

New 2010 Fishing Regulations pertain to Muskie Anglers
http://wildlife.state.nm.us:80/documents/fishingrules.html
A 1 fish per day, 40" minimum harvest will be allowed beginning the 2010 fishing season (April 1st). Our Chapter is now going to refocus our attention to this matter on trying to create a required-free "muskie permit" so the state can have a better idea what the number of anglers targeting these trophy fish in NM are, how often, etc..
